The origin of the Miniature Bull Terrier lies in England. In the early 18th century, the Bulldogs were crossbred with Old English Terrier and the Spanish Pointer to create a breed which was more adept at fighting the bulls. By the end of the 18th century, the Bull Terrier was crossbred with the Staffordshires by a breeder named James Hinks. Thus, the Miniature Bull Terrier was born. It was primarily used for hunting rats as well as for herding cattle and as a watchdog. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1991.

The Miniature Bull Terrier is a small sized dog with a square frame. It has a long head; small, almond shaped eyes which are dark in color; high set ears which are small and prick shaped; a black nose; a long, tapering muzzle; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a low set tail which is strong at the base and tapers towards the end. The tail is carried in line with the back in a horizontal manner. The breed has moderate length legs which are straight and strong with cat like feet. It has a short, flat and glossy coat which is harsh to touch. The color of the coat can be white, or any other color like black, brindle, red, fawn etc.

The Miniature Bull Terrier is an affectionate breed which becomes attached to its owner. It is good with children. Dogs not socialized at an early age do not do very well with other dogs. Caution is advised with smaller pets such as cats, rabbits, hamsters etc. because of the breed’s innate hunting abilities. This breed makes for an excellent watchdog. However, it is not a very good guard dog. It is an active breed which requires constant companionship. Thus, it is not recommended for families who like to leave their dogs alone. Given the overactive nature, it can be a little difficult to train. A consistent approach is required to train this breed. This breed adapts well to an indoor environment and thus, is well suited to an apartment life.

The Miniature Bull Terrier is a seasonal shedder. Its short and thick coat is easy to maintain. Brushing its coat once or twice in a week with a firm bristle brush and almost daily brushing during shedding season, and also rubbing its body with a damp towel once in a week are sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary using a mild shampoo. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection.

The Miniature Bull Terrier is an active breed which requires lot of exercise. Daily long walks are vital for optimum physical as well as mental well being of this breed. Walks should be supplemented with jogging and romping in an open but secure area every now and then. However, it should not be let off the leash in an open area as it has a tendency to chase small animals. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal.
