The origin of the the Gordon Setter lies in Scotland. This breed dates back to the 17th century. The exact origin of the breed is uncertain. However, it is believed to be result of crossbreeding between the Spanish Pointer and the English Spaniel. The breed owes its name to the Duke of Gordon, Alexander Gordon, in whose kennels the breed was originally found. In the olden days, it was primarily used as a bird dog, setting birds to help hunters hunt them. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1884.

The Gordon Setter is a medium to large sized breed with a sturdy frame. It has a small, long head; oval shaped eyes which are medium in size and dark brown in color; low set ears which are folded towards the end and carried close to the head; a black nose with flared nostrils; a long muzzle which is not pointed; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite or level bite. This breed has a high set, medium length tail. The tail is strong at the base and tapers to a point. It is carried horizontally, at or below the level of the back. It has medium length, strong legs with catlike feet. It has a long, soft and glossy coat which can either be straight or slightly wavy. The color of the coat can be a combination of black and tan.

The Gordon Setter is a loving, affectionate and an obedient breed. It is one of the slowest breeds to mature. It behaves like a puppy until the age of 3 years or more. It is great with children and works well as a companion breed. It is also good with other dogs as well as other pets, including cats. However, it can be reserved with strangers, which makes it a good watchdog. It has a strong sense of smell which makes it a useful breed for police work or tasks which require hunting down scents. It is easy to train and hence, it is well suited to beginners. This breed likes to roam about and does not adapt very well to an indoor environment. So it is not well suited to an apartment life. Gordon Setter can create a variety of sounds. It expresses its feeling through different tones and sounds

The Gordon Setter is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Its soft and shiny coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week and almost daily during shedding season. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. The ears and eyes should be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around the eyes, ears and paws need to be trimmed regularly. Its long hanging feathery ears tend to accumulate dirt and moisture so special care needs to be taken of the ears.

It is active breed which likes to roam and requires daily exercise. Daily walks are essential for physical as well as mental well being of the dog. Walks should be supplemented with the occasional romp in an open but secured fenced area. It has a tendency to wander and thus, should not be let off the leash in an unsecured area. This breed is prone to bloat so small frequent meals should be given instead of large ones.
