As the name suggests, the origin of the Scottish Deerhound lies in Scottish Highlands. Evidence suggests that the breed dates back to the pre-historic era. However, the exact time of the origin of the breed remain unknown. It was primarily used for hunting red deer, wolves, wild boar, kangaroo as well as other big game. During 18th century, the Scottish Deerhound became popular with the royal class, with anybody below the rank of earl refrained from owning the breed. This led to dwindling numbers of the breed, which were later revived by McNeil brothers through a dedicated breeding program. Like other breeds, the numbers of this breed fell again during the Second World War. Scottish Deerhound was first recognized by the AKC in 1886.

The Scottish Deerhound is a large sized dog with striking similarities to the Greyhound. It has a broad head; high set ears which are slightly small and folded back; blue or black nose with wide nostrils; small eyes which are dark brown or dark hazel in color; a strong muzzle which tapers towards the end; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a long tail which is strong at the base and tapers towards the end. The tail is carried straight down with a slightly upward curl in some cases. This breed has long, slender legs with small feet. It has two kind of hair on the body. That on the head, chest and stomach is soft while the neck and quarters have hard and wiry coat. The color of its coat can be various shades of blue-gray or brindle.

The Scottish Deerhound is a quiet and mild mannered breed. With proper training it does well with kids as well as other dogs. Although it is fearless and loyal to its master, it is not a good watchdog or a guard dog. It is an excellent hunting dog. Due to its innate hunting instincts, caution is advised with pets other than dogs such as rabbits, cats or even bigger animals. It is a slow learning breed and thus, difficult to train. A consistent approach is required to train this breed. If sufficiently exercised it can do okay in an apartment life but is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

The Scottish Deerhound is an average shedder. The hard and wiry coat of the dog needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed 2-3 times a week and also a professional grooming 3-4 times a year to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed regularly. The eyes and ears of the dog should be cleaned properly.

The Scottish Deerhound is an active dog which requires a lot of exercise. Daily long walks are recommended for physical as well as emotional well being of the dog. They should be supplemented with jogging or running. However, when out in the open, this breed should not be let off the leash as it has the tendency to go after other animals. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal.
