Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Information
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Description:The origin of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel lies in England. The breed has descended from King Charles Spaniel. During the reign of King Charles II, King Charles Spaniel was a popular breed and was given special importance by people. However, during the reign of Queen Mary II, King Charles Spaniel was crossbred with pugs and certain other small breed which resulted in a short nosed King Charles Spaniel. It was in the early part of the 20th century that a gentleman named Roswell Eldridge started looking for the original type King Charles Spaniel, offering a grand reward for anyone who had it. A dog named Ann’s Son won the reward and was thus used by breeders to create the original type of King Charles Spaniel. This King Charles Spaniel was then renamed as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. As with other dog breeds, the breed was on the verge of extinction after the Second World War. It was only through dedicated breeding programs that the breed was resurrected. It was first recognized by the AKC in 1995. |
