Havanese Information
Havanese Description:The origin of the Havanese lies in Cuba. The breed has descended from Bichon type of dogs, more specifically the Havanese Silk Dog, which is now extinct. It was in the 17th century that a breed known as the Bichon Havanese was brought from the Tenerife to Cuba and grew in popularity in the noble class. However, by the 18th and the 19th century, the German and French poodles grew in popularity and subsequently, the Bichon Havanese was crossbred with the poodle to give rise to present day Havanese. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1996. |
Havanese Care & Grooming:The Havanese sheds very little hair and is good for allergy sufferers. Its long wavy coat needs extensive grooming. Almost daily brushing is required to maintain a healthy looking coat. The hair on the head should either be trimmed or tied up in a knot to keep them away from the eyes. Its long coat tends to accumulate dust, so need to be bathed regularly but must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes, ears and teeth should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. The hair around its eyes, ears and paws, and nails should be trimmed regularly. Some dry food or bone should be given to the dog to chew, in order to keep its teeth strong and clean. |
Havanese Health Problems:The Havanese is a long living healthy breed with some health issues like Cataract, Patellar Luxation, PRA, Liver and heart diseases etc. |
